Lois Sykes : My Chicken Project
Ripley Arts Centre, Bromley,
from 6th - 30th April 2010

Eden Valley artist Lois Sykes has an exhibition at the Ripley Arts Centre, Bromley based on her paintings and drawings of chickens and aptly named 'My Chicken Project'. This solo exhibition offers a fresh look at chickens; drawings, paintings and rubber chicken assemblages created to interest and engage the viewer.

Lois Sykes’ paintings capture the quirky essence of these idiosyncratic and expressive animals, with a humorous and deft touch. She trained as an artist in the States and in Paris and now lives is a rural part of southeast England. Her childhood love of animals soon led her into painting what was around her.

She lives on a small holding with a veg and fruit garden, untamed flowers beds, some ducks, chickens, two ponies and a possessive cat. Although she is a member of The Society of Feline Artists, she also lends her unique touch to dogs, sheep, pigs, cattle and has been known to paint the odd ferret.

"For this exhibition I decided to pick one animal and study it in a relaxed manner. My chickens seemed the perfect subject. Anybody who keeps chickens at home will know they can be lively, fascinating characters. Mine regularly pile on the studio step looking like large breathing feather duster.  People talk about the health giving properties of chicken soup but the live thing is even better.”

The exhibition takes place at the Ripley Arts Centre, 24 Sundridge Avenue, Bromley BR1 2PX Telephone 020 8464 5816
The opening hours are 9.00am - 3.00pm Weekdays.
